Hazelnuts play an important role in the poultry silvopasture system implemented by regenerative poultry farmers in the Midwest. They provide shade and protection from predators, and as a perennial commodity crop, hazelnus can provide another source of revenue, contributing to the resilience of silvopasture systems. Hazelnut plants also perform ecosystem services by enhancing soil stability, erosion control, and soil fertility.
We've crafted a series of three engaging documents, collectively known as "Hazelnut 101," designed for farmers, nonprofits, funding organizations, researchers, and policy makers.
The Regenerative Agriculture Alliance, our valued partner in this research project, is keenly interested in exploring the synergy between hazelnut and poultry production to create "stacked enterprises." We worked together in the development of informational material on hazelnuts to benefit their extensive network of farmers and other alliance members..
